Elektra Sailing Yacht Conversion

Diesel to Electric - Electra Sailing Boat

Back in 2010, Skipper and engineer, John Rushworth was inspired to convert his Elektra Sailing Yacht to electric propulsion using LMC's D135 electric motor.

To convert the yacht, John Rushworth used an axial gap, axial flux and a permanent magnet electric motor from Lynch Motors.

Converting the Electra Yacht using a D135 electric motor resulted in slower shaft speeds (around 970 RPM loaded at full string voltage and a continuous 110Amps), better slow performance and higher instantaneous thrust when compared to the diesel.

What did John Rushworth have to say?

"I had originally ordered this motor, but as I had a small prop previously, I tested an ex demo LMC 127 motor (more RPM/Volt and less torque/amp) in the first instance.

This gave me good baseline data for direct drive propulsion. I'm looking forward to fitting the new D135 which will result in slower shaft speeds (around 970 RPM loaded at full string voltage and a continuous 110Amps) with the new prop referred to a few posts back."
